Reflexology is an art with ancient origins, coming from the East. It works on the principle that specific zones of the body can be treated with massage of corresponding areas - reflexes - elsewhere. The foot is most commonly used for treatment, even though the hand is used too. It is thought to have originated about five thousand years ago in China and was also used by the Egyptians. Reflexology does not use any sort of medication - merely a specific type of massage at the correct location on the body. The massaging of particular reflex points enable the channels (meridians) to be cleared, restoring the energy flow and at the same time healing any damage. Some practitioners believe that stimulation of the reflex points leads to the release of endorphins. Endorphins are compound that occur in the brain and have pain-relieving qualities similar to those of morphine. The soles of the feet contain a large number of zones, or reflexes, that connect with organs, glands or nerves in the body. In addition, there are small number of reflexes on the top and inside of the feet. The palms of the hands similarly contain a large number of reflex areas, reflecting the arragement seen on the soles of the feet. Reflexology massage initiates a soothing effect to bring muscular and nervous relief. The pressure of a finger applied to a particular point may create a sensation elesewhere in the body. A deep relaxation is also often related to a reflexology treatment.
